Air condition question for window placement?
Query by Mike m: Air problem query for window placement?
I have windows in my house that go left to correct to close, not up and down. I have an air conditioner unit that would usually go into a window that close up and down. When I set it into my window, there is a large gap that is over the unit to the best of the window. I set cardboard in that area but I do not feel it is a safe set up due to me becoming on the floor stage. What can I do to maintain the outdoors air out, and a lot more importantly, keep any person from breaking in?
Thanks!

You should have gotten a kit that will accomodate both type of window set up. If not attempt talking to the seller. Barring that you will require to fabricate a closure that are not able to be eliminated from the exterior and will block the exterior air passage. Check out the unit to see if there are some extendable wings that will do this for you.

remove air-conditioner from case place a 2×4 or 2×6 or what ever it takes to fill space and let it extend to both sides of the window casing. drill and place long screws and fashion 2x to top of case from the inside would be better to run a double 2x what ever. get some metal brackets from Home depot and screw into window casing for enough to get into the 2x window framing
cut out a piece of plywood and caulk it in and paint it to match the rest of the home
Window units don’t come with a kit to accomodate horizontal sliding windows. You will have to fabricate a substitute.
You could make it out of plexi-glass, wood/plywood or sheet metal. Whatever you use will have to be screwed to the top track of the a/c unit and the window frame.
Good luck.
